Welcome to the Premier's Reading Challenge page!
'The Challenge' aims to encourage a love of reading for leisure and pleasure in students, and to enable them to experience quality literature. It is not a competition but a challenge to each student to read, to read more and to read more widely.
The Premier's Reading Challenge (PRC) is available for all NSW students in Kindergarten-Year 9, in government, independent, Catholic and home schools.
Premier's Reading Challenge books are colour coded within our library after purchase so that students can easily locate appropriate books.
- Kindergarten to Year 2: Orange
- Year 3 to Year 4: Yellow
- Year 5 to Year 6: Pink
- Year 7 to Year 8: Green
Students in Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 participate in 'The Challenge' with the support of their classroom teachers who are provided with a box of relevant books. Teachers read 25 designated Premier's Reading Challenge (Premiere's Reading Challenge) books and 5 more which can be any book (a personal choice).
Students in Stage 2 and 3 are expected to participate independently. They read 15 designated Premier's Reading Challenge books and 5 personal choice books. Students can read 2 books from an approved series. All classes are provided with a folder which is held in the library and in classrooms where they progressively enter books as they read them prior to the 'Challenge' concluding. Students are strongly encouraged to enter their books directly into the Premier's Reading Challenge website. They can do this in school hours when the library is open. They are taught to do this in class. Year 1 to Year 6 are provided with a box of 'easier reads' in order to encourage students to complete the 'Premiere's Reading Challenge'.
